  • pea butter

My daughter has an allergy to peanuts and treenuts.  during our vacation last year at a resturant we where introduced to something called peabutter.  The waitress told us that it contained no nuts and was made with golden peas.  When i tasted it I was completely shocked as it tasted 100% like peanut butter.  the texture was a little different.  I asked her where i could buy it and she stated that it was made in the resturant.  tried to get the recipe to no avail.

    any input would be greatful.

I hope the waitress was not trying to pull the wool over your eyes.  There is a commercial product called Peabutter.  Here is the website address: www.peabutter.ca

You can buy it from them.  Hope you do receive a recipe for it.  However, if you don't, at least you have a source from which to purchase the product.

This is the first time we've heard of this -- so unfortunately I don't have any info to offer.

Sunbutter, made from sunflower seeds, is so much better than Peabutter (both available at Peanut Free Planet).

    hi,

peabutters website lists their ingredients as:

    "

    No Nuts Golden Pea Butter
    Beurre de Pois Dore

    INGREDIENTS:
Golden Brown Peas , Canola Oil, Icing Sugar (Contains Corn Starch), Monoglyceride from Vegetable Oil (Rapeseed and Cottonseed Oils)

    "

i'm absolutely sure you can whip up something as good or better in your vitamix.

My first thought, not knowing exactly what golden brown peas are, was to utilize golden lentils or split golden peas as a base ingredient. Their texture(s) would be similar (once either soaked/sprouted or cooked and drained) to that of a nutbutter.

Personally, I'd suggest using coconut oil and agave nectar, honey or a bit of organic sugar if needbe for sweetening. If possible...no sugar added would be your best bet.

If your daughter is not allergic to seeds, you might also incorporate some sesame seeds or sunflower seeds to the sprouted lentil or peas. This addition will add a nice smoothing texture due to the fat in the seed along with the nice smooth texture of the coconut butter to further emulsify and bind the combination to make butter.

I've made some beautiful nut and seed butters in my vitamix including sesame butter, cashew butter and pumpkin coconut butter! The addition of a small amount of oil (be it coconut, olive or your choice of vegetable oil) makes a nice buttery mouth feel and ads a nice hint of additional flavor.

Let us/me know how it turns out for you!

  • Sun Butter V.S. Pea Butter

I have tried Sun and Pea Butter (purchased at Planet Organic) and I found the Sun Flower Seed butter to be much better than the Pea Butter. As well, the ingredient list was much shorter on the Sun butter.  Good Luck,

    Jim

  • Golden brown peas made into pea butter

IKEA has some yellow peas they sell to make their traditional Thursday soup.  After some research, it appears they are the same peas as golden brown peas.  I took 2 Cups of them and ground them in my Vita-Mix.  I added canola oil slowly until a butter paste was made.   Add a little salt and sweetener to taste.  It was very good as a spread close to a peanut butter flavor.  You might want to try it.
