A Fabulous Food Show indeed!
I had a great time at the 2008 Fabulous Food Show held November 14-16, 2008 at the IX Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Must have been my lucky week, I won my tickets in a raffle here at work. Thanks Vita-Mix! Vita-Mix was a main sponsor of the weekend-long event. And it was very cool to see our logo on the signs and banners inside the exhibit hall.
The show featured a Main Kitchen Theater with live cooking shows with celebrity chef’s Paula Deen, Curtis Stone, Guy Fiere, Bobby Deen & hometown celebrity chef Michael Symon http://www.lolabistro.com/. I was only able to catch Michael Symon’s show. I was impressed at his showmanship. He was very funny and entertaining and was so excited to be on stage in front of his hometown crowd. Symon has owned several restaurants including the critically acclaimed Lola and Lolita restaurants in Cleveland Ohio. He has been nationally recognized for culinary excellence in numerous books, magazines, television shows and has been featured on the Food Network. Most recently he has been named “Iron Chef” and has just opened a new restaurant in Detroit, Michigan.
There were hundreds of exhibitors with huge displays and most passed out delicious samples of their products. I walked around and tasted everything that I could! I especially enjoyed the chocolate bar. Look at the unique cakes they had on display. Pretty cool!
My favorite vendor was Heini’s Market place, an Ohio Amish Country favorite for cheese http://www.heinis.com/ Of course I couldn’t leave with out buying the Lacy baby Swiss Cheese…I figured it would go good with wine and crackers for the holiday.
Other booths I enjoyed were Stancattos http://www.stancatos.com/ who gave out samples of their pasta sauce. I have been to Stancattos restaurant many times and the food is quite good. The meat sauce is my favorite!
Giant Eagle stores, this area’s largest grocery store chain, had a very large area to display their products and handed out samples of organic salsa and blue corn chips and samples of pumpkin cake. One not to be missed was the Sorcerer Seasonings and yes, I bought http://sorcererseasonings.com/ I loved the Salami cream cheese rolls and the fried cheese. I used the seasoning I bought to flavor some popcorn that was really good that way…a little tip from the demonstrator!
We even participated in the wine tasting at the Grand Wine Tasting Pavilion. For $10 you got 6 tickets good for tasting wine and beer and a Schott Zwiesel crystal wine glass. Pretty cool! Well since I went on the last day of the Food Show, the good wines were already gone! BOO HOO! I am a pretty picky wine drinker and I only enjoy Riesling but I thought I would try a few new ones. I didn’t find any good wines and actually tasted a few that were pretty bad, I hate dry wine. I had to go to a wine you can’t go wrong with and that’s Ferrante http://www.ferrantewinery.com/ one of my favorite places to go in the summer and early fall. If you ever get out to Northeast Ohio, you MUST stop at Ferrante. They have great food and a fabulous selection of wine – family owned and operated since 1937. A Shannon Lee favorite!
I made it a point to stop at the Vita-Mix booth and say HELLO!
I have to admit we had one of the better displays. The people walking by could not help but stop and be amazed at all the items Nate was blending together in the Vita-Mix. He was really a showman! He really amazed the crowd with his smoothie & ice cream recipes! It was so yummy!
I think the people couldn’t believe their eyes that you could actually blend whole fruit into ice cream. It was a thrill to see a very mesmerized crowd. Vita-Mix participates thousands of shows all over the world. Check out when we will be in your hometown here’s the link for US shows http://www.vitamix.com/household/shows/
I am always on the lookout for the words HEALTHY & CHOCOLATE together in a recipe. Well who isn’t right? It is rare you ever find those two words together but alas~ I have found one!
I came across this recipe in my search and I wanted to share with all of you. It’s a recipe from the June 18th Cleveland Examiner (Examiner.com) and it IS MADE RIGHT IN YOUR VITA-MIX.
It’s a healthy quick treat you make with raw cacao powder, which is higher in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Much more so than using regular processed cocoa. Click on the image to get to the recipe then try it at home and let me know!

Chocolate Bliss:
This group found a way to add healthy chocolate to their Vita-Mix smoothies. They use and feature the Vita-Mix machine where they put raw superfood drink mix, "Chocolate Bliss," into their smoothies. How creative! Great Job!

Back at again with the vitamix...mixin up some fun n sticky snack bars. I've been wanting to make something sort of like a raw Larabar but a little more moist and chewy. I like energy bars but they always seem really dry and borring...like you're eating just to not be hungry but not because you're looking to throw a party for your taste buds. I was kinda diggin the idea of using apricots and cherries for some tartness and balance it out with flavor of almonds and cashews. I crunched up equal parts of cashews and almonds with a pinch of pink salt. I then threw in the dried apricots and cherries and munched it a bit more until it started to form a loose dough. I sprinkled in a bit of cinnamon, a drizzle of almond essence and squirt of agave to get the dough to stick together a bit more. Then the fun part!....I dumped it out and mooshed it in my hands; sprinkling in some goji berries, cranberries and cacao nibs to give it some superfood kick. I then flattened it into a pancake shape and cut it into bars so I could wrap them up individual to snack on later. With odds n ends pieces left over I got really silly and formed them into balls and dipped them in the melted chocolate that I left from a few days ago. Now that's I call a party for your taste buds!
I've been on a cheese kick lately...experimenting with different kinds of nut cheeses and the like. I recently did a seriously tasty raw, vegan nacho cheese that anyone would be hard pressed to tell the difference between it and the dairy version. What I love so much about nut cheeses is that with the right combination of ingredients you can really get a killer cheesy flavor and texture without the bogus negative qaulities of using dairy. My conscience and belly are totally stoked!! I'm still working on a firm cheese alternative which has a been a little tricky but I'm always stumbling upon new ingredients and processes of creating raw food magic!
looking forward to rawkin out in the kitchen tomorrow playin around with raw chocolate tasties! fUn Fun fUN!!
I tried the Healthy Chocolate Pudding recipe in the VitaMix today and it was REALLY, REALLY Good!!!! Who would think that you could make an amazing chocolate pudding with Avocados and Almond milk?!
Shannonlee had posted the link to the San Francisco Examiner, June 18 article. I didn't know if it was okay to copy and paste it or not, but if you go to Shannonlee's profile I'm sure you can find it. It's called Healthy Chocolate I think.
Find it here: http://community.vitamix.com/_HEALTHY-CHOCOLATE-recipe/blog/397863/22442.html
Anyway, it's worth the trouble to find it and try it, 'cuz it was amazing! & it says you can make it in a blender.....
Oh, I used Blueberries instead of Raspberries. & in my VitaMix, it only took about 30 seconds, not a whole minute like a smoothie.
Here in Canada, winters are long and cold. This recipe helps warm things up.
To the VitaMix add:
1 cup milk
1 scoop protein powder
1 banana
1 tablespoon hot chocolate powder (dark chocolate is better). Cocoa powder would work as well.
Turn machine on, increase speed to 10 and switch to high. Let the machine run for about 4 minutes or until a lot of steam escapes from the top.
No more scalded pans making hot chocolate.
Watch the Vita-Mix put a healthy, modern twist on an old favorite.
Quicker Than Instant Chocolate Pudding
2 Medium Avocados, Peeled and Pitted
1 Cup Grade B Maple Syrup
1/2 Cup Water
4 Teaspoons Pure Vanilla Extract
4 Tablespoons Dark Cocoa Powder
1/4 Teaspoon Sea Salt
