I live in Parkinson, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. I help coach people to Health and Wellness to improve their lifestyle and finances. As a mother and now a grandmother for the fourth time, I also believe in the importance of using toxic free products in my home. Since losing 18 kilos of weight over the last year through Nutritional Cleansing, I am now maintaining my weight loss by continuing to cleanse my body of toxins combined with a well balanced food choices. By adding the Vitamix to my kitchen, this will give me and my family even more healthy food choices every day.
I have been juicing with friends as we do the 28-day Raw Food Cleanse with Penni Shelton and crew over at the Raw Food Rehab site. I love connecting with friends every day, but there are days when I really just would prefer to have a regular green smoothie made in my trusty Vita-Mix. I watched someone make juice by doing the vegs and fruit up in the Vita-mix and then straining it through a 'juice bag'-- I'm going to recommend that in my blog at http://blog.rawgenesis.com
Greetings My Friendly Vita Mix Owners!
I am new to the scene and am looking forward to sharing with everyone... I am excited about the recent purchase of my new Super Vita-Mix 5200 food preparation machine! I received it yesterday and have just begun to to read the remaining welcome packets and pamplets that came with the Vita- Mix... I think it's awesome that the company has provided owners with so many tools and information to ensure a successful and positive experience when using thier product.
I had contemplated on purchasing the Montell Williams Living Well -Health Master machine, but quickly changed my mind after reading the horror stories about the product... One of the reviews I read happened to mention the Vita-Mix machine and I recalled previous plans of purchasing one years ago so I said, why not, you get what you pay for so why not buy the best after all it's backed with a 7 year warranty and the corporation's excellent customer service reputation preceeds them... So I will soon find out what all the rave is about once I begin using my new power machine! LOL. I am pumped about being able to prepare fruit smoothies for my boys and green smoothies for breakfast for myself ... This machine can even knead doughs for breads! double Wow!
I am in the process of transitioning to food consumption that will include 90% veggies, steamed fish (tilapia/salmon), whole grains, and fruits, just finishing my 30 day flesh (meat) free experiement to cleanse the inside, so now the Vita Mix will be my assistant in preparing healthy whole foods ... I have a goal of losing about 160 lbs and will begin exercising and introducing light weights with the weight training routine and high reps, in addition to much cardio... walking etc next week... Oh and a gallon or more water of water per day ... Always start your morning with an 8oz glass of water (energizing) and helps get your day started and system moving :)

I have been offline for quite a while, so I apologize to those who were following. Long story short, we were broken into and lost our TVs, computers, etc. in June. We decided to take the insurance money and do renovations on our house rather than repurchase electronics. This was both a good and bad thing. Good, because we realized just how much time we wasted in front of the TV and/or computer. Bad, because this included losing our P90X and with the distractions that come along with both being broken into and summertime, I let is slide all the way until now. The farther I got from my workouts, the farther I got from the healthy eating habits I had established as part of my Candida cleanse as well. The good news is that as long as you are alive you can ALWAYS get back on the HEALTH WAGON! So, I am back again! I look forward to getting back in touch with my vitamix friends for both support and recipes!
A special shout out to Rene Oswald, who posts great recipes, videos, and other fun stuff all the time on the vitamix community. I want to be just like her when I grow up!
In recent years, a lot of attention has been given to how to detox your body, also known as cleansing. In these days the topic is so popular that you may have heard of it before. While some individuals may jump right on the detox bandwagon, you may be looking for more information. For example, what reasons call for a detox diet? Continue reading on to find out.
1 - Drug or Alcohol Dependency
A dependency on drugs or alcohol is the biggest reason why you could benefit from detoxification. Unfortunately, this detoxification is recommended under the care of a medical professional. Withdrawal symptoms can be severe for many.
Although drug and alcohol dependencies are common reasons for detoxification, very few individuals fit into this category. If you only enjoy a glass of wine or a beer from time to time, you are likely classified as a social drinker, not an alcoholic.
2 - Lack of Energy
Millions of Americans suffer from a lack of energy or feeling lethargic. There are many reasons for this, one of which is deprivation of sleep. Another reason could be a medical condition. For example, some thyroid conditions can leave you feeling fatigued and without energy. People who suffer anemia also feel extremely tired and weak. Once these issues have been ruled out, it is time for a body cleanse or body detox.
Many of the foods and drinks we consume are ridden with unnatural chemicals and other additives and conservatives. By many standards, they are safe, but it is their accumulation that needs to be considered. Even healthy bodies do not fully expel all toxins and harmful build up of them; this is why a cleanse is advised. When your body starts to feel like new from the inside, you will notice a significant change in your energy levels.
3 - Skin Problems
The buildup of toxins in the human body not only impacts energy levels and our internal organs, but the skin as well. Some individuals with acne problems have tried various different forms of over-the-counter medications without success. However, many of those same individuals noticed an improvement in their skin with a full body cleanse.
While on a full body detox, many fast or consume all-natural foods. If you are looking to improve the overall appearance of your skin, you can go a step farther. Switch to organic or natural skincare products, including lotions, creams, shampoos, and soaps.
4 - The Consumption of Unnatural Foods
When it comes to unnatural foods, there is some confusion. Many view unnatural or processed food as safe. Since there are millions of foods currently available for sale in department stores and grocery stores, these products are often viewed as safe. Yes, technically they are, but many are full with unnatural chemicals and additives. Some of these stay and buildup inside our bodies. That is why a body detox or cleanse is recommended.
An easy way to cleanse your body, without fasting, involves consuming all-natural, organic foods. Some recommend doing so for a week to a month. On that same note, after a detox, your body is clean and "pure," again. So, it is advised that you be careful with what you resume consuming, otherwise the buildup process will begin again.
5 - It Is Easy
Many are surprised to learn how easy and affordable it is to cleanse the body. Since it is easy to cleanse or detox your body, why not at least give it a try?
As previously stated, eating organic foods for an extended period of time can help to cleanse or detoxify your body. That is the easiest approach to take, but there are other options. Popular ways to detoxify the body include water fasting, juice fasting, and the Master Cleanse. Since you have many options to choose from, choose the option that is the easiest and most comfortable for you.
In short, there are many reasons why a body cleanse or detox is recommended. Whatever the reason for cleansing, you will be happy with the results. Discover what the 10 day detox can do for you. Those results should include healthier skin, more energy, and a slight weight loss.
This morning I did my first veggie juice.... put some carrots, apple, celery, parsely, cilantro, ginger in with some water and ice cubes and gave it a whirl.... the result was pretty thick but pretty good... the cilantro and ginger added a nice taste. It will take a bit of an adjustment getting used to the thickness of whole food juicing...but i'm looking forward to it. Years ago I had a juicer and didn't feel good about all the pulp that was thrown away...I found it expensive and wasteful to have to buy a super sized bag of carrots for a little bit of juice. Now, I'm ready to explore organic foods knowing that I'll be eating all of it.
I also got Rene's ebook yesterday - Transition to Living Cuisine - looks pretty interesting...not sure if I'll ever go completely raw ... but I definitely want to incorporate more raw foods in an easy to eat way...lots of recipes and helpful info in there that i've seen from my first looks...can't wait to try some of the recipe's. I'm just finishing (in another week) a detox cleanse thing...so I need to keep my sugar really low right now...but in another week I'll fire up the blender with lots of fruits and greens and give those recipes a go.
Yesterday I picked up a "Prepara Herb Savor" (http://www.amazon.com/Prepara-PP01-HS100-Herb-Savor/dp/B000YMOXKC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1241787447&sr=8-3) in order to find a way to keep my fresh herbs lasting longer. I was able to fit half a bunch of cilantro in one...so I think I'll go out and pick up a couple more today so I can keep an ample supply of herbs on hand for cooking and blenderizing.
So, now that my candida cleanse is coming to a close, and I have developed much healthier eating habits, I am now starting the 3rd week on my new exercise regimen, the P90X, yes, the same one that runs those awful infomercials all the time. My hubby wanted it initially and I decided if he would drink smoothies (WITH GREENS!), then I would do the workouts too. We do not work out together (that would be grounds for divorce), but we are both doing the same program. We turned our office into the workout room.
First of all, I can tell you that this is a HARD workout. I am not a complete couch potato, but I have not had a real workout routine for years. This program kicks my butt; I can't even do a lot of the stuff, or I have to do it in a modified form (ex. I do pushups from my knees right now and pull-ups with a band). My hubby isn't a body builder either, so we are both very challenged. But I do appreciate the mottos they use - "do your best, forget the rest", "just show up and push play" and the trainer on the videos is very good.
We did a lot of measurements when we started and weighed ourselves. I swore that I would not touch the scale again until day 30 which is April 19th. I think I am typical of most women when I say that I am very critical of my body and regardless of how much my hubby insists that he sees results, I don't see it. But each day I can do a little bit more of the workout, or go lower on the pushups, or lift more weights, so even if I don't see it I know something is happening. Doing it together (but at separate times) has meant being supportive of each others' efforts: we bring each other water and after really hard workouts make each other smoothies. He has become quite the smoothie maker and actually gets upset if I run out of greens to put in his smoothie now. This is a straight meat and potatoes guy who I use to beg to eat a side salad at dinner.
P90X includes a meal plan as part of the program and guess what the first phase is??? Low Carb!!! No Sweets!!! High Protein!!! Isn't that what I just did for the past 8 weeks??!!! I'm thinking that my morning smoothie is going to be great to keep up with. I am going to make lots of veggie soups and sauce bases in my vitamix. I will need to find some non-flesh protein alternatives because, although I am not currently a vegetarian, I am not a huge meat fan either. Hello nut butters and seeds, tofu, soybeans, whatever - I like it all. Send non-flesh protein ideas my way quick!
I apologize to everyone who has faithfully been following along with me on the journey. I own a small business and one of my employee's just had their first baby (well, his wife did) and he asked to have a week of his vacation when the baby came. That meant I had to do his job and my own which has meant 10-12 hour days since last Thursday. I wanted a good night's sleep to deal with it, so I avoided my computer at home completely to keep from being tempted to stay up late online. I hope you will forgive me.
Tomorrow is the last day of my candida cleanse. I almost can't believe I did it! 8 weeks without sugar, artificial sweeteners, bread, pasta, rolls, pastries, potatoes, sweet fruits, almost no caffeine, and almost no starches at all. I feel great. I lost some weight. I am sleeping through the night for the first time in years. Was it worth it? A resounding YES. Am I going to celebrate with some pasta? YES! Am I going to go back to my old habits? NO. I dont know who the quote is from, but this paraphrase is true - "Nothing tastes as good as being healthy feels."
My morning smoothie is now a way of life for both me and my hubby. I am going to ramp it up a bit with more fruit and greens and less whey protein. It is part of my goal to still transition to as much fresh and raw food as possible. I am going to keep making homemade almond milk and nut butters - has anyone made macadamia nut butter? I adore them, and as good as the raw pecan butter was I think I will be even more excited with macadamia nut butter.
Organic produce is still very difficult to come by where we live, so it is a challenge. I have to mail-order raw nuts and seeds. And I am still looking for a raw food chef or coach in the Coastal Georgia area, if you are out there! Otherwise, I'll have to head down to Florida, get trained, and become the Coastal Georgia Raw Food Chef!
I am now in Week 7 of my cleanse. I no longer have any detox symptoms and have seen a significant reduction in fatigue and the other more minor issues I hoped the cleanse would help with, so at this time I am planning to complete 8 weeks - Hurray! My skin - I havent had a single blemish in 5 weeks; I also have a terrible problem with some sort of coldsore-like virus that shows up out of nowhere in my nose (it looks as horrible as it sounds and they last for about 10 days); I developed one a week ago and it never got any worse than an itchy spot and went away within 3 days - I think the detoxification gave it no room to grow! I started a workout program this past Saturday and am really excited about it. It is DVD based and includes a variety of different kinds of exercises both cardio and strength training. It is not easy, but allows a lot of room for modification for those of us (like me) that are not ready for the hard-core stuff! I did make one boo-boo tonight - I had some early morning meetings so I did not get to work out until late in the day. So late that I ate dinner and about 20 minutes later tried to work out. Bad idea - I made it through most of the workout but when I went to do ab work on the floor I got a shot of pain (heartburn?) up my chest. I couldn't lay down to do the ab work. NOTE TO SELF - Eat at least an hour before or an hour after. And, if I had made a smoothie for a light, late dinner, I probably would have been fine, rather than having a full meal. Lesson learned. I am hoping to figure out how to work this video camera we have and do a video of my candida smoothie for you soon. It has really made this cleanse a lot easier. I have never been able to eat a big breakfast (eggs, bacon, etc.) first thing in the morning, and not being able to have any bread-type breakfast items (bagel, muffin) left me stuck without breakfast if my smoothie wasnt available to me. And I make a HUGE one so that I am not too hungry and over-tempted to cheat at lunch. I did start adding one new ingredient this week - a handful of young spinach! I cant even taste it. And now the hubby is having them too! You know what I am most looking forward to having in 2 weeks? Bananas! Pears! Mango! I miss sweet fruit. In fact, I think I could actually do without bread and pasta permanently if I want to. I am still really wanting to move more and more to eating living cuisine, so the end of this cleanse would be a great time to move forward in that goal!
Yesterday was the beginning of Week 6 of an 8 week candida cleanse process. For those who have not read the first blog post, this requires avoidance of all starches (baked goods, rice, pastas and veggies included), all sugar and sugar substitutes, and even sweet fruit. Candida, which naturally occurs in everyone, feeds off sugar, so since starches turn to sugar in the digestive tract they must also be eliminated, in order to kill off the overgrowth and bring the candida back to a natural balance. Candida can cause all kinds of health problems that many of us and doctors attribute to other causes. For me, it has caused fatigue, weight problems, irritability, all issues that I tried to deal with in other ways both homeopathic and via medications. It has not been easy, but in the past 5 weeks I have felt a significant drop in my cravings for sugar and starches, which were almost overwhelming and constant when I started. My energy level has improved, but not yet to the level I am hoping for, but I think that has more to do with my sedentary lifestyle than the candida now. I have lost about 10 lbs anyway, without exercise - I am now plateau'd and have sat at the same weight, give or take a pound, for 2 weeks. But I know I have eaten healthier in the past 5 weeks than I have in the past year, lots of veggies, lean protein, nuts, and seeds. I am loving my morning smoothie, and my homemade pecan butter on tart green apples. I have days when rather than a meal I eat a handful of nuts and seeds and I am satisfied. And homemade almond milk - gotta love it! A lot of this would not be possible with a regular mixer - my vitamix is the most valued power tool in the house right now! The hardest part at this point is variety. I pretty much love all veggies but the rest of my household does not. Being able to sit down and eat a meal together without make 2 separate ones has been challenging, so I am fixing a lot of the non-starchy veggies the rest will eat with a protein and a salad. I am getting bored. I wish there was a raw food chef/instructor close to me - I looked for one online, including Alisha Cohen's site, and the closest was still 3.5 hours drive one-way. I think I would really enjoy learning to make some of the more exciting raw food dishes that feel a little overwhelming when I just read a "un-"cook book. I own all the equipment I think I need, but for the life of me get scared to try to make this stuff. It is so much different than the way we were taught to prepare food. But that is the direction I really want to go. I am starting to not enjoy the taste of flesh protein very much, probably because I have been eating a lot more than usual during these weeks. I have tried to make a few soups in the vitamix and they tasted good but I didnt like the "foamy" texture. Maybe I'm just having a bum day - it has been raining here for 3 days now and I want some sunshine! I definately can't wait to be able to eat all kinds of fruits again, to get back to green smoothies, and my homemade energy bars, full of raw honey, nuts, seeds, and low-temp dehydrated fruits. I use to make them in my food processor, so I wonder if the vitamix will work instead?~
I've been fighting off a headcold for the past 3 days which has made me sleepy, cranky, and have pretty much no appetite, so not much of an update to give you. I just wanted to touch base with those who have been so supportive reading the blog.
After about 7 beautiful, warm days we had a cold, rainy day, which did not help my cold or mood. I do have one positive to say - my 15-year old daughter had this same cold for 2 weeks and counting, while I am definately on the tail end of it already. Since she is the young, slender, very physically active one (4 days a week of very intense dance lessons, plus swimming on the off days), I have to assume it's the healthy eating that is making the difference. You can't eat junk food forever!
I still have not gotten my butt up to exercise. I have no excuse. I wont even try. I know that regardless of the eating habits, I am plateaued at my current weight (dare I share it? 169 lbs) until I give my body a reason to burn it up.
My husband is waiting over my shoulder for the computer, so I have to end here. Talk again soon.
I errored on my last post - I have a total of 8 weeks or more to do this, so I have completed 3 weeks and 2 days, with just short of 5 weeks to go. Sorry about that.
My husband took me away for our 17th wedding anniversary to St. Augustine, FL. It was beautiful. It is a great town to walk everywhere so we must have walked 5 miles a day. We spent one afternoon at the beach club that was part of our hotel (which was not on the beach but an historic hotel right downtown). I can't say I stuck to my candida eating hard-core, but nibbles are better than bites. I did not gain any weight, which is always a concern on a special trip like that. And I had several wonderful salads, with ingredients I havent thought of before but will definately start using.
As soon as I was back home, I was back on track. Just finished making a new batch of Strawberry Frozen Yogurt. I made a recipe for Baked Stuffed Zucchini last night, using my vitamix to prepare the egg-based stuffing (more like a souffle). I didnt like the baked zucchini; I prefer it raw. But the stuffing part was good and fluffy.
I have noticed a sharp reduction in my general appetite/hunger level. I get full on less (maybe because most of what I am eating is full of either protein or fiber). And I am not hungry as often. I always have my smoothie for breakfast, but it is often mid-afternoon before I want anything else, and several times a handful of raw nuts or half a tart apple with my homemade pecan butter has sufficed until dinner. Perhaps this is another effect of the cleanse? My body is no longer craving sugar or unnecessary calories? I am definately not starving myself.
